Meet CBI fellow William Agnew: Applying technology to empower marginalized communities

William Agnew combines deep technical expertise in Computer Science with an already vast experience in community building and non-profit organization to empower marginalized communities with usable privacy, security, and data and model ownership tools. In collaboration with Sauvik Das, they seek to develop and share tools that allow marginalized individuals and communities to own and meaningfully control their data, and models derived from that data.

Meet CBI Faculty Host: Sauvik Das

Sauvik Das directs the SPUD (Security, Privacy, Usability and Design) Lab, which works at the intersection of human computer interfaces, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. His work is oriented around answering the question, "how can we design systems that empower people with improved agency over their personal data and experiences online?" He will be hosting the CBI fellow William Agnew, focusing on advancing this line of work with an emphasis on marginalized communities.

Pratiksha Thaker is an expert in building fast and efficient distributed data processing systems at scale. As a CBI fellow working with Virginia Smith and Steven Wu, she aims to utilize her expertise to build systems that make differential privacy more practical, particularly within the framework of federated learning.

Meet CBI Faculty Hosts: Virginia Smith and Steven Wu

Virginia Smith and Steven Wu actively collaborate in the area of federated learning, creating provable and deployable architectures to enable privacy-preserving machine learning across distributed data silos. Lack of privacy can be a bottleneck for adoption of future machine learning systems. Research towards privacy enhancing technologies is the central focus of the work of CBI fellow Pratiksha Thaker with Smith and Wu.

Meet CBI fellow Vivek Thangavelu: Creating technology for the environment

Vivek Thangavelu works on autonomous robotic systems in contaminated and unstructured environments. As a CBI fellow in Aaron Johnson's Robomechanics Lab, he aims to further advance this research field by studying how multi-robot systems and semantic models can allow for autonomous decisions in a wide variety of environmental conditions.

In the Robomechanics Lab, Aaron Johnson and his team work on how to get robots to adapt and operate in challenging, real-world environments. This research thrust has direct applications in areas like environmental monitoring and agriculture, which are at the center of CBI Fellow Vivek Thangavelu’s project.
